More and more, development agencies use email and web-based collaboration tools and platforms to hold e-discussions and e-conferences, exchange and disseminate information, and generally share experiences.
One widely-used tool in the development community is Dgroups.
Dgroups is an increasingly vital tool for hundreds of organizations and networks – especially those in the south – that are engaged in development activities.
The uses of Dgroups in Latin America were studied in 2004 by the Fundacion Acceso and were found to include: Internal communication: communication between organizations; organization of events; virtual communities; virtual forums of limited duration; work groups; and publishing. (how to use the platform)
Other freely-available platforms of this type include Google Groups and Yahoo Groups; in the development sector, ELDIS and IGLOO also support their own e-communities.
