With the qualtity of information online growing exponentially, tags are becoming an important tool to manage relevant information. Tags are used in all kinds of social applications to organize and find information online.
Where databases - of libraries or museums for example - have long used keyword and index terms to describe the content of their collections, the current enthusiasm for tags is based on individuals 'tagging' what they publish and share. Such tagging helps to organize content, it also adds user-relevant context, and can be used by groups in a structured way to share resources.
Tags - or labels or keywords - are used to describe and classify blog posts (blogger or wordpress), photos (flickr), bookmarks (del.icio.us), presentations (SlideShare), email messages (gmail), and videos (blip, youtube).
People often display tag 'clouds' of their services, offering an immediate way to "summarize the popular topics of a network, show the interest of a person or represent the demand of a community. They bring transparency, simplicity and relevance." [read more]
